Childrens reading

Hi, my name is Amber and I’m currently doing work experience at the Imaginarium. Here are some of my tips on how to encourage your kids to read more.

With an increase in children watching instead of reading I often find myself wondering what went wrong? Is there no more good books? Is it just not cool to read anymore? After thinking on this I came to the conclusion that it’s a combination of these things that is stopping children from reading.

My parents, for example, found that when my brother would bring his work home from school, his handwriting was terrible and his spelling even more so. To combat this, they implemented a simple scheme, every school night before bed they read a chapter of a book, my brother reading one half and a parent reading the other. Since then, not only has my brothers spelling and handwriting improved but also the quality of his writing and his confidence with independent reading.

Now I’m not saying this is a fault-proof method to get your child reading but it has certainly helped my brother in more ways that one. Below is a list of books I think would be good books to start your children on and the age groups I suggest for them:

·         The Alex Rider series- Anthony Horowitz (8-14)

·         The BFG- Roald Dahl (7-13)

·         Who Let the Gods Out- Maz Evans (8-13)

·         The Creakers - Tom Fletcher (5-7)

·         Gangsta Granny- David Walliams (6-10)

·         Rooftoppers- Katherine Rundell (7-13)

·         The Explorer- Katherine Rundell (7-13)

·         The StrangeWorlds Travel Agency- L.D.Lapinski (8-10)
